Impeachment?

Sidebar:  Sad post to write but somebody’s got to.

In the past few decades we have watched Gregory Pyle evolve into a leader we have grown comfortable with.  Despite preferring to hire Nahullo’s in higher positions of management I feel he loves the Chahta in his own way.  I would prefer to see him retire than face possible impeachment.  I would like to see him leave the CNO with dignity for the many things he did accomplish.

Why are some pushing for impeachment?  Our Chahta constitution says (I am paraphrasing) that if a chief is impaired he can be removed from office.  This idea of impeachment saddens me but the suggestion brought to our attention from other readers cannot be ignored. The Chahta people cannot be ignored any longer.

We don’t want Batton, not just the Choctaw Voting Block party members but many others who are deciding which way to go. If we have four more years of Batton there is no telling how many Chahta people will lose their livelihood and as in the blog post “Another Batton Firing”, medical insurance.  Our people cannot take another four years of Nahullo rule from a man who continues to ignore Chahta pleas for true empowerment.  Forget true empowerment – DO SOMETHING TO STOP THE TYRANNY!

I had lunch this week with the Choctaw Delegate for our young people and one of our candidates for council.  This is just a portion of what was said by our candidate, “Chief used to make his own decisions.  Now he lets those people around him make all the decisions.  It’s sad to see those people take advantage of his illness”.  We were all quiet because it was true.

Chief, I know your office reads this blog and I don’t know if you are reading it personally but we don’t want to impeach you to get rid of Batton.  If you are indeed going to retire or you are ill please give your people a chance to vote for the Chief who will follow you.  Trust the Chahta people to make their choice don’t force this man down our throat.  He has proved over and over that he finds us unworthy of even the simplest of answers.  One of our brightest stars requested to only know why he was terminated and he wasn’t given an answer and still to this day doesn’t know.  You didn’t know he was fired either or you wouldn’t have contacted him to see when you and he would be leaving for the awards ceremony only days after he was fired.  You didn’t know – and that’s one of many reasons we know you are stepping back and letting Batton step forward.

Chief it isn’t you we want to impeach it’s him.  He is not our champion.  We request a special election if you do decide to step down.

One More Batton Firing

Imagine if you will being in lots of pain in your muscles and deep within your bones.  You are in so much pain you can’t make it through a full work day.  You start to panic because the many doctor appointments and days off are making you uneasy.  Your annual leave runs out.  Your sick leave is used up completely.  You are afraid you will lose your job but even more so you are afraid because you lost a sibling who was only in their early 40’s.  Could this be the same horrible disease?

You are asked to take short term disability but as insurance companies tend to do they have denied it.  After all you have no official diagnosis.  Other organizations such as the Indian Health Service have programs to help people with such an illness.  Sometimes they are allowed to accept donations from other employees who have lots of sick leave and are in danger of losing it anyway.

None of this was done.  With doctor co-pays piling up and still no diagnosis Gary Batton’s administration fired this Chahta ohoyo without blinking.  After all wasn’t it Susan Stockton who flippently bragged about having no qualms about firing anyone, “…send em’ to me I’ll fire em’….”.  Gary Batton whose own wife has an immune system disease but hey she’s got insurance.

You know you sign off on the firings Mr. Batton.

What would the Choctaw Employee Rights Organization have done in this case?  The CERO would have assisted her in every way possible insuring she had all the information and tools available to receive her short term disability.  It would have been the RIGHT thing to do after many years of service.

You can bet an administration controlled by the Choctaw Voting Block candidate wouldn’t tolerate an Executive Director of Human Resources bragging about the coldness of her firing ability.

Why does our administration allow such behavior from a non-Chahta?  Why are the two directors in Human Resources allowed to go against Policy and Procedure when it suits them?  Why does he allow such abuse from one of his highest offices?  It’s almost as if he feels HE needs to impress THEM!

Find your backbone Sir!  Stop this treasoness compliance.  What has happened to this ohoyo, one of your own people, is against your own!

Guest Readers

The blog gets views from many countries including Africa and Canada.  I want to speak to our guest readers for a moment.  You could only be regular readers for a couple of reasons.  You are Chahta living away from the U.S. or you are facing similar circumstances.  So I wanted to discuss what we are trying to do here in our Chahta Nation.

Our tribal members are being oppressed and abused regularly, not all but enough to make it an opportune time to change the system for the betterment of the Chahta people.  We can only do this by changing our constitution.  We can only change the constitution by voting in new Council, Chief and Assistant Chief or by getting their cooperation and I seriously doubt that will happen.

An elected system whether it be tribal or a system such as the US government has voters who should control the system – in a balanced system this is the case.  In tribal governments there are sometimes billions of dollars at stake and that leaves the door open for lots of greed.  Nahullo’s who once saw our Chahta people as something in passing have now come to control and partake of that money to the detriment of our own people.  This can only be done with the blessing of our Chief, Assistant Chief and Tribal Council.

Now, lets look for a moment on how to solve this problem and politically PROTECT leaders of governments.  It’s really simple you set up a system to protect the people who have the power to vote you in.  That’s why I keep talking about a tribal employee rights organization (in our case the Choctaw Employee Rights Organization).  This idea was actually given to me by the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.  The EEOC has no jurisdiction over tribal entities so it is up to the tribe itself to ensure the rights of their tribal members aren’t being abused.  Having a Tribal Employee Rights Office independent of the regular human resources office is essential and politically makes a lot of sense.  Not only would it free up leadership from dealing with tribal employee issues but it gives the tribal member a sense of security and protection and that is sure to show at the polls.

Also, for those administrations who don’t want term limits or balanced political systems the only chance to unseat poor leaders is to do so gradually.  To pop up with only three to four months to campaign is ludicrous especially, if like our administration, the registered voter list is unavailable and the voter base is large.

To those organizations facing similar situations.  We the Choctaw Voting Block Party wish you well and always keep in mind this quote by Edmund Burke, “All that is necessary for the the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”

Breaking Down The Ideology

Good Morning Sisters and Brothers,

Today I would like to discuss the differences between Gary Batton’s ideology and the Choctaw Voting Block Party ideology using real world examples given to me by our blog readers.

Example #1

A young woman with a college degree gets into a custody issue with her former partner.  She ends up serving time in jail.  She is in her early twenties and is now the sole support for herself and her child.

Batton ideology:  She gets a low paying job even though policy and procedure forbids hiring a felon.  She is making minimum wage.

CVB ideology:  Her application comes into the Choctaw Employee Rights Office (CERO) because she is a tribal member.  There is no policy forbidding the hiring of felons.  She is given an assessment to establish her personality and work traits better ensuring a good fit when hired.  Since she already has a degree the CERO wants to partner her natural traits with her education and her life experiences.  Where might this lead her?  Possibly as an advocate for tribal children rights.  This young single mother will be brought in above minimum wage but due to her lack of experience not much above minimum wage.  Therefore she is referred to CNO daycare which is now based on income (only after the CVB candidate is elected into office).  She is also referred to WIC (her child fits into their age range for services).  Finally, she is referred to housing and the CAB program.

*  This young mother is working and trying to do the best she can for her family once she moves up in the organization she will gradually not need the CNO services.

Example #2

Batton ideology:  A distinguished Chahta man winner of numerous national and local awards and recognitions has offended a powerful HR executive and is fired after well over a decade of faithful service to the people.  He is fired and then upon calling this administration is not told why – still to this day.

CVB ideology:  The Chahta man goes to the CERO and explains the situation.  The CERO, having established from its inception that all Chahta employees in danger of losing their jobs be put on administrative leave pending a full 360 investigation, puts the Chahta man on administrative leave.  A full investigation ensues and the following would most likely occur:

*  The Chahta man is found to have committed a serious grievance and is encouraged to explain his actions in writing.  Where upon his years of service and possible problems are examined.  He along with his Executive Director and HR establish a plan of action whereby the employee can keep his job if he agrees to follow the protocol established.  OR

*  The Chahta man has been found to be a victim of jealously and fear due to his substantial success in a department he helped to create.  It is found the HR Executive had went against policy and procedure.  Due to the HR Executive’s Chahta heritage, instead of being fired she is asked to take retirement or is found another position without supervisory duties.  She is given a plan of action established by CERO.

Example #3. There is a Chahta woman who is proud and passionate concerning her Chahta heritage.  She speaks the language beautiful and knows our customs and unique ways, so much so her face and voice was featured on phone systems and on television.  She is seen as a trouble maker because the non-Choctaw’s mistake her passion for the people as insolence.  She has reason to be offended hearing in the halls and offices at the CNO headquarters many disparaging remarks regarding Chahta people.  She is moved from department to department until she is finally fired for assisting an innovative Chahta native speaker who has established a ground breaking Chahta language program.  She pleads to the administration and Batton personally to no avail.  She is fired by a non-Chahta.

CVB ideology:  It is obvious to the CERO, which is where she would have went for assistance, that this strong Chahta woman would make a wonderful ambassador for the Chahta Nation.  After all, she trained and assisted the non-Chahta who currently acted as the ambassador.  The Chahta tribal member would have kept her PR duties and expanded them to make appearances on behalf of our nation across the country.  She would not have lost her job.

Example #4

Batton ideology:  The Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma is now a multi billion dollar corporation and doesn’t need to protect its Chahta employees.  The Chahta people need services for when they cannot pay their rent or car payment.  They need scholarships to attend school and seed money to start businesses.  The CNO is pressured to make all this happen and they need the expertise of the non-Chahta to see that services are kept intact.

CVB ideology:  Spending millions of dollars on consultants to train Directors and Executive Directors on a tribal system they don’t understand is wasting money that could be spent on providing our orphans a home, our elderly a pension program or our people a transportation program.  Yes, the CNO is a billion dollar corporation that exists for Chahta families ONLY therefore it is a family business.  Non-Chahta’s do not understand sovereignty and what we stand to lose if it is ever taken away AGAIN.  By hiring non-Chahta’s to operate the CNO a glass ceiling is virtually created because the non-Chahta’s then have to protect their jobs by making sure the Chahta’s know they are not to be too creative or strategic.  Through the creation of a pro-Chahta administration, services are still intact to Chahta’s but so is the opportunity to make their own living by working for their own people.

Example #5

Batton ideology: To take the office of Chief without having to run for office.  No paying the $5000 dollar running fee, no having to scramble for workers to work events (employees are strongly strongly encouraged to provide assistance) and no fund-raising needed.  All monies are kept in confidence.

CVB ideology:  When an outgoing Chief cannot finish his term there should always be an election.  There should be two-term limits for Chief so the Chief does not “sit” in office for decades becoming complacent to the empowerment of the people.  All government business should be transparent to the people.  Every dime, every dollar accounted for along with plans for future spending.

I know you have heard all of this before but the foundation principles of the Choctaw Voting Block Party are simple, we are pro-Chahta.  We are for transparency and a more balanced system of government for our people.  We are for true empowerment of the people.  One of our members called for the cooperation of the current administration to address our grievances and those grievances have not been addressed even though that would make political sense for him (Batton) to do so.

So do we wait for this administration to see our arguments even though it would mean term limits and transparency?  Apparently, my friends that is going to be a very long wait.

Chahta Pride

I recently read a post by a young Chahta person who found it difficult to show respect to people expressing their views on the perceived lack of indian intelligence.  This mindset infuriates me and begs the question, how long does it take to recover from an attempted genocide?  How long does it take to recover from our children being taken from our grandmothers and grandfathers only two generations ago and put into boarding schools to assimilate to nahullo society?  How long does it take to heal from being punished severely for speaking the language of our ancestors?

Let me tell you why these questions are still relevent and important.  Because to heal and prosper from such atrocities takes GENERATIONS.  Where do you think these haters originally heard those first words of hate for indian people?  I would make an educated guess that the disdain for indians is a learned behavior from their parents/relatives who in turn heard it from their parents/relatives.  So we go back three to four generations to a race of people who wanted land, who coveted above all else prosperity and the easiest way to get what they wanted was to make the indian people less than what they were in the eyes of not only the dominant society but to the indians themselves.  This has been going on for generations.  We were the last to gain citizenship (1924).  Our religions were touted as heathen and savage AND were illegal until only recently.  Our ancestors style of dress, mode of housing and traditions were all declared uncivilized and inferior and like the propensity for inherited traits this feeling of inferiority has been passed down through the generations to our young people.  It may not look or feel quite the same but believe me it’s the same old “you are but a savage” mentality that was in place 200 years ago.

Just because we are a quiet and unassuming people doesn’t mean we won’t stand up.  Just because we are peace-loving and introverted doesn’t mean we won’t take back what is ours.  Just because our leadership has let the Nahullo’s infiltrate our home doesn’t mean we won’t take it back.

Listen to me young Chahta men and women you must prepare yourselves to become involved and lead our people.  Not only lead our people into the future but lead our people with ethics, honesty and unprecedented integrity.  I for one believe we can set the foundation for generations to come in the very near future.  What we need are leaders who never take their eyes away from the future of our people.  What we need are leaders who are not the puppets of the greedy nahullo’s.  What we need is to never lose our pride in being Chahta!  Let the haters show their ignorance because they are only trying to make themselves feel better for you as young Chahta’s are going to be the future of the Chahta Nation.

Choctaw Wright on Facebook

Good morning Sisters and Brothers,

If you have not “friended” Choctaw Wright on Facebook you are missing out on many good conversations discussing the topics posted to this blog.  Here is an example concerning the post “Felons”:

DM:  Most often, CN does not hire Chahta felons. There are non-Chahta felons currently employed for CN. Also, there are numerous employed that were never prosecuted in any court of law that have commited viscious felonies, ranging from grand theft to hate crimes. If you are connected powerfully, you live lawlessly because you are politicaly exempt. This must change.

SS:  It’s not just CN! It’s everywhere . BUT, that person must want to change and make better. I know this, I’m an ex felon , did a six year sentence for gangs and havin a gun on school property in 96, now I work at the (deleted to protect SS) of the Choctaw Nation as a mentor coordinator. So don’t say you can’t work for the nation. O, and I did get a college degree since I been out.

Choctaw Wright:  Stanley, I commend you brother and you are exactly what I am talking about.  Now, I don’t know how long or how you got your position but the official policy is “no hiring felons” and I know many Chahta’s who haven’t been as lucky as you.  You are right, the person must want a good productive life and you are doing such good work – that is why I say you are the example I would give for the argument of getting rid of the policy especially since the policy is followed in some cases and not in others.  As a matter of fact, a person with your background and your experiences is the best one for the position you are in.  Good for you Stan.

DM Yakoke sister for saying what others are too intimidated or scared to say.  And I know you have been in positions across the nation to have seen much.  You are right it’s time for change.  It’s time to give everyone the same opportunities as SS.  It’s time our leaders become pro-Chahta across the board.

Readers, if you can join us on Facebook as a friend of Choctaw Wright that would be great.  If you could tell your friends and family to do the same that would be even better.  We look forward to meeting you via Facebook!

Felons

Good evening Brothers and Sisters,

There is a group I am a part of and there has been lots of talk about the CNO policy of not hiring felons.  I am here to tell you this policy is wrong.  Now, I know some of you will wonder why I would disagree with such a policy.

First, I must tell you about a young man who is my kin.  At the age of 21 he was smoking a lot of pot.  The crowd he hung around with was doing the same and more.  One night in his own home he and his friends were playing poker and smoking.  One of his friends had brought his wife and small child.  No one at the poker table saw the child leave the apartment and go out into the parking lot.  Thankfully the child wasn’t hurt but the police, rightfully so, were called.  This young man was charged with possession and child endangerment and got ten years probation and was convicted of a felony.  He is now 34 years old and with the felony on his record his twenties and thirties have been spent working a low paying job.  He has been paying for this one mistake most of his adult life.  At least he has been able to find employment but he knows better than to apply at the CNO even though he is Chahta.  He doesn’t know the “right” people to be hired with a felony on his record.

I will tell you something else about this man.  He is honest and is the type of person who wouldn’t/couldn’t hurt a soul.  He is a good, consistant employee one that does his job with little complaint.

I posted in my group that I find it odd that Jesus Christ forgives without another thought if only the person should ask.  The CNO well that’s another story.  I have to wonder how many good Chahta men and women would love to have a chance to work for their tribe?  How many out there could be good productive citizens of our nation if just given the chance?

You see true empowerment doesn’t mean you have to be perfect before you ever walk through the front door.  True empowerment is being given the opportunity to become productive and proud of a job well done.  We will never have true empowerment beneath a Batton administration.

Young Chahta – A New Delegate

Sisters and Brothers,

A young person has stepped forward to be the Chahta Voting Block Party delegate for those Chahta people age thirty and below.  This young person has an interesting story

The Chahta worked at one of the Casino’s.  The person failed a drug test due to marijuana he/she was subsequently fired.  He/she was fired for breaking policy and procedure an act also committed by other’s on the directorship level (hiring a felon).  Back to our young Chahta, he/she went to rehab and stopped smoking pot.  She/he begged for the job back and was told he/she could never for the rest of their life work for the CNO.  He/she takes total responsibility for his/her actions.  He or she was 20 at the time, 20!  How many of us at 20 always made good decisions?  Life is a classroom and their will be good lessons and bad.  The key is to take your lessons and learn from them which is exactly what this young person has done.  No longer working for the CNO he/she feels there is nothing the CNO can do to him/her now and feels very strongly about the principles and goals of the Chahta Voting Block Party.

This young person believes the key to the election may be the young Chahta voter because of the power of the social networks.  This person has big plans to use all the technology possible and to go door to door if need be.  He/she takes total responsibility for his/her actions.   You see this person is a Chahta leader in the making despite being exiled from making his living among the people.

Picking Up Crumbs

The CNO has a new program called “Hire Choctaws”.  I applaud this new program.  I only have a few questions.

1.  Exactly what level of jobs?  For example, are these techinical, managerial or director positions?

2.  Why wasn’t this type of program created and put into place much earlier than April 2012?

3.  Is this a new CNO directive?  Meaning, are there consequences for not hiring Chahta’s enforced by Batton?

4.  What about the abuse and oppression suffered by Chahta’s who are currently employed with the CNO?

5.  Has a pipleline/succession planning for Chahta employees been implemented?

So, the multitude of Chahta’s who have lost their jobs, their homes, their means of transportation and their reputations, what about them?  For the Chahta’s who suffer abuse almost every working day, what’s the plan for them?  Are you going to send them to their “safe place”?  A safe place directed by unethical, policy and procedure defying leadership with a non-Chahta executive director?  The “Hire Choctaws”, department is directed by a non-Chahta who hired his spouse and oversees his spouse (against P&P) and his Executive Director is also non-Chahta.

Why now assistant chief?  Is it because you are just now realizing that Chahta people are tired of the state of affairs?  You have worked for the CNO most of your adult life and you are just now realizing this?  I think it’s something more,  it is just my opinion, you surround yourself with non-Chahta’s because you don’t think the Chahta people will do anything about it.

Brothers and Sisters you will see this administration scrambling to appear to be pro-Chahta but as long as an independent organization such as the Choctaw Employee Rights Organization is not implemented it’s just crumbs to pacify those who question the practices of this administration.  Am I rooting for the new program, you bet I am but it’s not enough.  Once Batton becomes chief his place will be solidified and you will see, as you do now, that programs such as this are shallow and don’t seek to address the bigger issue.  Chahta people should run the Chahta nation and we need a Chief who supports that concept instead of  a future chief who continues to support the decisions of unethical executive directors.
